Fujitsu Siemens Computers announces two new BS2000 Business Servers
The SX100-D and SX160 models combine the power of the open mainframe operating system BS2000/OSD with SPARC64 architecture
Bracknell, UK - June 11 2007 – Fujitsu Siemens Computers has announced its two new B2000 Business Servers: the SX100-D which is aimed at entry-level mainframe users, and the SX160 with its medium performance range. Both systems are based on SPARC64 processor technology that Fujitsu Siemens Computers also uses in its high-end UNIX servers.
“In order to measure the economic viability of the BS2000 mainframes, you must take their secure operation into account together with the fact that there are hardly any faults nor maintenance,“ said Joseph Reger, CTO Fujitsu Siemens Computers. “The purchasing or leasing price alone does not say that much. But when you add up all the other cost factors, such as power consumption, the space required and future security, the total price/performance ratio is attractive and underlines why Business Servers should be employed in the company’s IT infrastructure.“
In addition to the S class servers, the SX line is the second strategic server range provided by Fujitsu Siemens Computers in the mainframe sector. Both server lines offer BS2000/OSD users a high level of investment protection and immense potential with regard to innovation and development opportunities. The SX Business Servers run with the operating system version OSD/XC. The OSD/XC functions correspond to the current BS2000/OSD V7.0 and have been ported to SPARC64 architecture. OSD/XC provides unrestricted BS2000/OSD functionality for SX servers. Existing customer applications run on a binary-compatible basis with OSD/XC on SX servers.
BS2000 supports service-oriented architecture (SOA) applications. One of the main aims of BS2000/OSD system strategy is a runtime environment that allows for simple use of application software and enables innovation. This is made possible by an identical system environment, irrespective of the operating mode (Native or VM2000) and the platform (S or SX server).
SX100
The price/performance ratio of the new models in the SX100 range makes them an extremely economic solution for a company’s IT infrastructure. In combination with proven BS2000/OSD functionality using SPARC64™ technology the Business Servers SX100 provide an innovative system platform for the low-cost operation of existing BS2000/OSD applications. The complete package of three mono processor models with up to 8 Gbyte main memory is fully equipped with all the components required to support comfortable BS2000 operation. Full object compatibility protects customer applications and previous investments in BS2000/OSD. The user can concentrate on his core business and is supported by an efficient easy-to-use system.
Operating costs are minimised due to low space, energy, maintenance and service requirements. In addition to the integrated hard disks, which as a mirrored unit ensure the highest levels of data security, and the integrated tape jukebox system with several terabyte capacity for quick data backup and archiving, FibreCAT and Symmetrix storage system in a SAN (Storage Area Network) can be used via fibre channel.
SX160
The new SX160 Business Servers supplement the BS2000/OSD server range in the medium performance sector and are positioned below the servers in the S165 and S200 model range. The servers in the SX160 model range are optimally suited for medium-sized and large companies which have particular requirements regarding versatility and flexibility. They are particularly suitable as a consolidation platform on account of their high stability, wide performance range and flexible scaling. Effective partitioning and virtualisation technology ensure the efficient use of system resources and thus support the economic server operation of various application environments under BS2000/OSD and Solaris.
The following successful partitioning concept is continued in the SX160 Business Servers: each partition has processors, main memory and I/O connections thus representing a separate operating system level that acts as if it were a separate computer. Within the BS2000/OSD hardware partitions VM2000 (the virtual machine concept of the BS2000/OSD) offers additional sophisticated mechanisms for the optimal allocation of resources. Optional SX160 hardware features, such as CoD (Capacity on Demand) and OLR (OnLine Replacement), use resources flexibly reducing the amount of time spent on maintenance work. The comprehensive features in the Autonomic Systems concept from Fujitsu Siemens Computers increase system availability even further. Connections based on current FibreChannel technology enable the use of modern communication networks as well as storage concepts in SAN networks.
The simultaneous support of the leading Unix-based operating system Solaris 10 means that SX160 Business Servers provide a comprehensive offer of application solutions from major software manufacturers (ISVs) enabling a wide range of usage scenarios in web computing and e-business. For example, existing BS2000/OSD applications can be easily integrated in the Internet via openSEAS not only at low-cost but without program modifications.
In comparison to the previous SX150 model the SX160 multi-processor models increase performance by up to 25 per cent. The hardware extensions have additional new features such as the 4 GBit fibre channels, the tape system TX24 with state-of-the-art LTO3 technology and the main memory which can now be configured up to 64 GByte.
