Intel's new Xeon processor MP (Gallatin) offers greater PRIMERGY server consolidation potential
- Major performance boost for 4-way and 8-way PRIMERGY systems ensures reduced administration and IT infrastructure costs
Following Intel's recent launch of the new Intel® Xeon™
processors MP (Gallatin), Fujitsu Siemens Computers has announced that it
plans to add more CPU power to its four-way processor PRIMERGY H450 and R450
servers, as well as its 8-way PRIMERGY T850 system. This significantly
increases the performance capability of these servers in consolidation
projects, where users are looking for a way of taking as many applications
as possible that used to run on smaller servers and combining them on a
single system. The main benefits of this for users are to be seen in reduced
administration and infrastructure costs.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers plans to introduce the PRIMERGY H450, R450 and
T850 servers with the new Intel Xeon processors MP at the end of 2002. The
new Intel Xeon processor MP has a 2-GHz clock rate and the fastest version
offers an integrated, 2-MB third-level cache, thus providing a greater
overall performance bandwidth for complex applications. This processor also
achieves its maximum performance power by making use of the integrated
hyper-threading technology and the Intel NetBurst™ micro-architecture.
The new Intel Xeon processors MP offer performance improvements of 20 to 38
per cent compared with the 1.6-GHz / 1-MB version (Foster). On the basis of
first measurements, Fujitsu Siemens Computers anticipates a TPC-C figure of
approximately 68000 tpm_C with a 4-way processor server. This is a
significant improvement of around 29 per cent compared with existing
Foster-based systems.
