Simultaneous internal/external display is only supported in the LCD panel's default resolution. The external display device (monitor, LCD projector/panel) must be capable of displaying the same resolution as your LCD display panel's default resolution. To use the Fujitsu PC LifeBook's Simultaneous internal/external display mode with models that come with high-resolution (800x600) screens, your external display device (monitor or LCD projector/panel) must support at least an 800x600 resolution.

Please check the following:

1. Are your Power Savings features set to the factory defaults of MAXIMUM BATTERY LIFE? If not adjust this settings in your Fujitsu BIOS configuration or through the Fujitsu Power Center Software within Windows 95. Please check you Fujitsu PC notebook manual on configuration of Power Saving features.
2. Have you checked your screen brightness? Adjust the LCD backlighting to low brightness by using the brightness slider on the LCD (SELECTED MODELS ONLY).
3. Have you disabled the CD-ROM autoplay feature? (Only applies when docked to the Enhancement unit ) Disable the default Windows 95/98 CD-ROM Autoplay feature (Flashing CD-ROM indicator on your Status LCD). Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the Windows 95 Taskbar.
   • Click the word Settings that appears on the menu, then click the words Control Panel to open.
   • Within Control Panel Double click on the System icon and the System Properties dialog box will display
   • Click on the Device Manager tab
   • Click on the "+" sign next to the CD-ROM icon
   • Next, Double click on TEAC CD-38E (or the model of your CD-ROM)
   • Within the TEAC CD-38E (or the model of your CD-ROM) Properties click on the Settings tab
   • Remove the check mark from Auto insert notification by clicking on the check mark.
   • Click on the OK button to close the dialog box
   • Click on the OK button to close the System properties dialog window
   • Click on Yes to restart the notebook.

If your notebook is to be stored for a month or longer, turn the machine off, and remove all Lithium ION batteries. Store your notebook and batteries separately in a cool, dry location. If you store your notebook with a battery installed, the battery will discharge, and battery life will be reduced.

Caution: If your battery is installed with your notebook while in storage, and the battery is faulty, this could cause damage to your notebook.

DriveSpace and DriveSpace 3 were designed to work with the FAT12 and FAT16 file systems and cannot be used with Hard Drives using the FAT32 file system.

Note: When you try to compress a drive with DriveSpace or DriveSpace 3, you may receive the following error message:

Drive C cannot be compressed because it is a FAT32 drive.

How do I know what file system my Hard Drive is using?

The steps provided below will guide you through checking what file system your notebook is using:

1. Double Click on the "My Computer" icon on your Windows Desktop.
2. Right Click on the Drive you want to check. (Normally C: Drive).
3. Scroll down and Left Click on "Properties."
4. On the General Screen, the information provided is the Label, Hard Drive type, File System, Used Space, Free Space, and Capacity of the Hard Drive. The File System will inform you what File System you are on (i.e. FAT16 or FAT32).

Note: Windows NT does not support FAT32, and does not have DriveSpace or DriveSpace3 as a Windows NT option. These steps are targeted for our Windows 95 and Windows 98 consumers.

Incorrect settings of your video resolution or the use of an incorrect video driver causes the one-inch, black border. These are controlled in the Display menu of the Windows 95 Control Panel. Follow these steps to check the current settings of your resolution and driver:

1. Click Start
2. Choose Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double click the Display Properties window.
5. Click the "Settings" tab.
6. 6. Click and drag the slider to the RIGHT in the Desktop Area or Screen Area to change the output resolution of the video card to match your LCD's maximum resolution 800x600 or 1024x768. If your resolution option is still limited to 640x480 or 800x600 try the following steps

Note: If your operating system is Windows 98, continue to Step 7 through 26. If your operating system is Windows 95, skip steps 7 through 26, and continue to Step 27.

To change the Display Settings in Windows 98:

7. Click the "Advanced" button on the bottom of the page.
8. Click the "Monitor" tag.
9. Click the "Change" button.
10. The Update Device Driver Wizard will come up. Click the "Next" button.
11. Select the option "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location..."
12. Click the "Next" button.
13. Select option "Show all hardware."
14. Select either "Laptop Display Panel (800x600)" or "Laptop Display Panel (1024x768)."
15. Click "Next"
16. Location of driver should say "C:\WINDOWS\INF\MONITOR.INF"
17. Click "Next"
18. Click "Finish"
19. The wizard will close and bring up the video adapter's Properties.
20. Click "Close"
21. Now onto Display Properties.
22. On the Screen area click on the slider to the right to get 800x600 pixels or 1024x768 pixels.
23. Click "OK"
24. A message "Windows will now resize..." will popup. Click "OK"
25. A message "You resized your monitor..." will popup. Click "OK"
26. The display setting will now be correct.

Note: If the display has not changed, you may need to reinstall the driver. See "Reinstalling the Video Driver in Windows 98"

To change the Display Settings in Windows 95

27. Click on the "Advanced" button (located on the bottom of the page).
28. Click on the "Monitor" tag.
29. Click on the "Change" button.
30. Click on "Show all devices"
31. Click on (Standard monitor types) in the left window
32. Click on Laptop Display Panel (800x600) or Laptop Display Panel (1024x768).
33. Click on "OK"
34. Click on "Apply"

The display will now be set to the correct setting.

Note: If the display has not changed, reinstalling the driver may be necessary. See "Reinstalling the Video Driver in Windows 95"

Reinstalling the Video Driver in Windows 98

1. Bring up the Display Properties Window
2. Click on the "Settings" tab
3. Click on the "Advanced" located on the bottom of the page.
4. Click on the "Adapter" tab
5. Click on the "Change" button
6. The Update Device Driver Wizard will come up. Click on the "Next" button.
7. Select the option "Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location..."
8. Click on the "Next" button.
9. Click on the "Have Disk" button
10. Select the drive and path (the location) of where the manufacturer's file is stored. Type in the information or Browse to find it.
11. Click on "OK"
12. Click on "OK" again.
13. Click on the "Next" button.
14. Click on the "Finish" button.
15. Click on the "Apply" button.

Reinstalling the Video Driver in Windows 95

1. Bring up the Display Properties Window
2. Click on the "Settings" tab
3. Click on the "Advanced" located on the bottom of the page.
4. Click on the "Adapter" tab
5. Click on the "Change" button
6. Click on the "Have Disk" button
7. Select the drive and path (the location) of where the manufacturer's file is stored. Type in the information or Browse to find it.
8. Click on "OK"
9. Click on "OK" again
10. Click on the "Apply" Button.

Note: DOS-based applications, or games in the MS-DOS mode, will default to a limited resolution of 640x480 pixels. To overcome this DOS-limited display resolution, you can force the display to stretch the image to fill the entire screen by enabling Compensation Mode or Display Stretching. Check your Fujitsu PC user's guide for information on enabling the Compensation Mode or Display Stretching. The Compensation Mode and Display Stretching options may not appear on some models of the LifeBook Series.

Partition Magic version 2.01 is not compatible with machines using FAT32 partitions. A patch from the Software Manufacturer is required. Please download this patch from the following Web Site:

LCD displays can have some faulty pixels (e.g. 'dark spots'). Therefore, the following Fujitsu-Siemens criterion should be taken into account when judging wether a LCD pixel defect is covered by the warranty for the product.

The Fujitsu-Siemens guideline is in line with the norm ISO 13406 Class 2.

Assessment of faulty pixels on LCDs The pixel (which consists of 3 subpixels) is defective if one or more of the subpixels can't be controlled, i.e. the pixel/subpixel stays the same colour despite being instructed to change to another colour and is visible 30 cm from the LCD panel surface. Typically such defects can be seen as bright spots on dark background or dark spots on bright background. A defect white or black pixel can be seen if all 3 subpixels of a pixel are defective. (Type 1, 2). A coloured spot can be seen if there are one or more defective subpixels.(Type 3)
Fault clusters are defined as: Two or more pixels or subpixels with faults within a 5x5 block of pixels.

The general criteria and criteria for each LCD panel type for an acceptable amount of defective pixels is defined in the table below.

Maximum number of faults per type per million pixels (e.g. a XGA display 1024x768 has = 768432 pixels)

If your machine is older please use the following acceptance criteria to see whether it is covered by warranty.

Pgpdisk 6.02 and 6.5 (installs Pgpmemlock.sys and Pgpdisk.sys drivers)
Adobe Type Manager 4.0 (installs the Atmhelpr.sys driver)

Because on TFT screens Pixels are in a fixed location, the native resolution of a TFT is precisely defined; the number of pixels corresponds to the maximum resolution.
However, if you have to switch to a lower resolution, as it is sometimes necessary, there are two possibilities:
a) Compensation disabled: black frame around the (centered) picture, only the number of pixels at the chosen resolution are visible.
b) Compensation enabled: the electronics scale the 'smaller' image up to the maximum size of the display panel - the result will be a distorted image.

Cause:
In the case of CRTs, the electron beam can be adapted to the new resolution by simply changing the deflecting voltages and so changing the focal size. However, in the case of TFTs, due to the active control of every individual pixel, complex scaling electronics are required to recalculate the data for smaller resolutions.
With whole number scaling factors (e.g. a factor of 2 when scaling 800 x 600 up to 1600 x 1200) the height and width of each pixels are doubled - the displayed image is correctly shown.
Things become more difficult when scaling from 800 x 600 to 1400 x 1050. The scaling factor is then 1.75, i.e. not a whole number (integer). It's no longer possible to uniquely assign data to a single pixel in every case. The electronics therefore has to decide whether to activate one pixel or two. Mathematical rounding-off errors then lead to unpleasant effects when displaying text, like blurring edges on letters or 'blocky' appearance of numbers.

Solution / Workaround

Use only the native (maximum) resolution of the TFT-display of your notebook for best picture quality. With all other resolutions a lower picture quality must be accepted.

For some reason the W2K recovery does not set up the laptop.

Solution: Update your McAfee.com virus protection software
When you purchased your notebook, McAfee.com virus protection software had been pre-installed. Recently, it was discovered
that the McAfee.com software may cause unexpected results when entering or exiting suspend mode. This
anomaly could affect your system's overall battery life by interfering with your preferred power settings.

To ensure that you do not encounter the anomaly detailed above, be sure to disable the automatic update feature, as
detailed below.

Fujitsu wants you to get the most out of your LifeBook notebook. With this in mind we strongly recommend that you
perform this procedure. Failure to do so may impact the battery life that your preferred power conservation settings can
deliver.

Disable the automatic update feature:
1. Turn on the system and click Start. Click Programs (Windows 2000) or All Programs (Windows XP), depending
upon your operating system).
2. Select Accessories -> System Tools -> Scheduled Tasks.
3. Double-click on McAfee.com Update Check.
4. Select the Task tab if it is not already selected. Uncheck the "Enabled (scheduled task runs at specified time)"
checkbox.
5. Click [Apply], and then click [OK].

NOTE: In the future, you can check for updates by double-clicking the McAfee.com icon in the system tray at the
bottom right of the widow. When the McAfee.com Security Center window appears, click the Updates icon. Click
[Check Now]. The system will dial up McAfee.com. Follow the instructions on the screen to download the update. Note
that prior to downloading the update, you will be required to register your software with McAfee.com.

The Q815485 patch was issued for users running Windows XP operating systems on their computers. Some users found that installing the patch caused them to lose the ability to connect to their wireless LANs. (Note: The problem affected only users with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 LAN Mini-PCI adapter with Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security features enabled.) Microsoft and Intel are aware of this issue, and are working towards a resolution.

In the meantime, you will need to uninstall the Q815485 patch. To do so, follow the procedure below:
1. Click the <Start> button, then click the Control Panel icon to open it.
2. Double-click Add and Remove Programs.
3. Once the list of installed programs appears, scroll down the list until you see Windows XP Hotfix (SP2) Q815485. Click on it.
4. Click on the <Change/Remove> button. When you are asked whether you really want to remove the program, click <Yes>.
5. When a message appears telling you the uninstall is complete, click <OK>.

If you are loading Windows XP onto a computer with a serial ATA (SATA) hard drive, you will have to manually load the SATA drivers.

The first step is to put the SATA controller drivers on a floppy disk.

Copy the Intel® 82801FBM SATA AHCI Controller zip file from website http://www.fujitsu-siemens.com/support/downloads_1.html and expand into root directory of floppy disk. (i.e. root directory of floppy disk should contain \pide and \sata folders, txtsetup.oem, etc. files.)

Then, boot system by Windows XP installation CD, when the message "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver" shows up, press "F6". Then, press "S" to specify additional device when next screen pops up. Put the driver floppy disk you made in and press enter to continue. If the floppy disk is made successfully, the installation program will ask for selecting driver. Please then select " Serial ATA RAID Controller(Windows XP)".) After SATA driver loaded and Windows XP can recognize the SATA HDD, you can continue to install Windows XP as usual.
