Windows XP Rebuild Instructions

Introduction.

Often problems are encountered within Windows that seem to have no particular cause, sometimes even errors that seem to indicate there are problems with hardware. It is often problems with windows that are causing this (not necessarily the program but drivers or programs that have reconfigured Windows and now stop it from working correctly. A software rebuild can sometimes cure this problem or if there is actually a hardware problem make diagnosis easier.

The aim of these procedures is to provide a series of easily understandable instructions to allow the novice user to rebuild their installation of Windows XP"™. The computer was supplied with all the required materials.

Required:

  • WindowsXP™ Recovery CD-ROM (Fujitsu-Siemens)
  • Product Registration Code. (On the Top cover of the machine).
  • Optional:

    Drivers may be contained on a single CD-ROM or a combination of floppy disks and CD-ROM disks.

    If in doubt, consult the Fujitsu helpdesk before you continue!

    This is a major operation and is only to be used in circumstances where all reasonable efforts to correct a problem have failed. Please pay particular attention to the instructions in the first section. Failure to do so may seriously compromise the restoration process.

    THIS PROCESS WILL CAUSE THE LOSS OF ALL DATA ON YOUR HARD DISK DRIVE

    Remember that assistance is available from the Fujitsu helpdesk

    (09:00 – 20:00 weekdays 10:00 – 16:00 on Saturday).

    Note: Individual key presses such as the key Y are represented by <Y>. The <Return> key may be labelled as <Enter> or with the symbol ¿

    . For consistency it will be referred to as <Enter>.

    Stage (1) – Starting the System.

    Switch on the computer and wait for the first dialogue to appear.

    Insert the Windows XP™ CD/ROM in the CD drive

     

    You will either be asked to press a key to boot from CD (please press a key) or to boot from cdrom or HDD (choose cdrom)

    You will see a blue screen "Windows Set-up" as XP checks the machine out and copies files across.


    The computer will stop at a screen similar to the one above, We recommend cleaning the partition by removing it, Instructions on how to do this here

    Stage (2) Preparing the Hard Disk (Formatting the drive).

    Press <enter> to begin set-up

    You will then need to format the drive, you have 2 options NTFS (quick) or NTFS, we recommend using the NTFS option.

    The machine will show a progress bar as it formats the drive and then continue onto the next stage of the installation process.

    You will then have on the screen a Software License Agreement. <Click> on the accept box to accept the licence agreement.

    <Click> on ‘NEXT’

    Next Windows XP™ will install and Set-up itself.

    Enter your name (Essential) and Company Name (Optional). Once you have entered your name and your company name (If entered) <CLICK> on the NEXT button.

    Enter a name for the computer (the computer may do this for you)<CLICK> on the NEXT button.

    As the FSC XP recovery DVD only runs on a FUJITSU SIEMENS unit, no CoA code needs to be entered. So the screen is automatically skipped.

    Enter your name (Essential) and Company Name (Optional). Once you have entered your name and your company name (If entered) <CLICK> on the NEXT button.

    You will arrive at a screen asking for ‘Date/Time Properties’. You will see displayed in the text box:

    (GMT - 08:00) Pacific Time (US and Canada); Tijuana

    To the right of the text box, you will see a black down arrow (6). Please <Click> on this arrow to drop down a list of available time zones. We are looking for the entry:

    (GMT) Greenwich Mean Time; Dublin, Edinburgh, London, Lisbon.

    When you see this displayed please <Click> on this selection to display it in the text box. Now, please <Click> on ‘OK’.

    The computer will bring up a box telling you it is going to test your video card click <OK>

    Another box should appear telling you that if you can see the box the settings are correct click<OK> if you can see it.

    Follow the on screen instructions through


    Enter the user names, that are going to use the machine (it does not matter if you dont know or forget someone at this stage).

    No more questions are asked , just click to progress until you are in Windows

     

    At this stage either insert the Drivers and Utilities disk in the drive and follow the on screen instructions or call the Fujitsu Helpdesk for advice and guidance in installing your hardware.

    Removing the partition

    If you have a partition already on the HDD, highlight it and press D

    There will be an explanation of what is to happen and you will need to press <enter> to continue.

    Now you are required to press L to continue the deletion

    Once finished you will arrive at this screen. You still need a partition to install XP so you need to create a partition, press C

    Choose the size and once the partition is created format the drive and continue installation
