The world behind the acronyms

Manageability standards

DeskView is the leader when it comes to basic standards

We would like to give you some information about individual standards. Just to introduce you we start with an overview and explain some abbreviations:
  • DMI stands for Desktop Management Interface and is the standard interface for desktop management.
  • PXE (Pre-Boot Execution Environment) is a specification which enables clients to interact with the network.
  • WMI stands for Windows Management Instrumentation and is the new standard interface for Microsoft operating systems.
  • WfM (Wired for Management) is a specification for optimum client management. ESPRIMO and SCENIC PCs were the first worldwide to conform to the WfM standard.
  • SNMP stands for Simple Network Management Protocol and is the standard interface for network management.
  • ASF stands for Alert Standard Format. It is forced by the DMTF (Desktop Management Task Force) for alerts deriving from LAN (Cover opening, Heartbeat, P.O.S.T. errors, Processor missing, Watchdog). ASF supports the same alerts as with AoL today. Implementation of the technical Standard ASF 2.0 started with Intel 865 Chipset based systems. DeskView supports both standards (ASF 2.0 and AoL) depending on the detected system.
