MultiPath supports redundant data paths from the server to the storage subsystem, either with load balancing or failover. DuplexWrite offers the possibility of mirroring data on separate storage subsystems. If a fault occurs in the storage subsystem, the system automatically switches over to the redundant subsystem and the administrator can restore the data online again after this error situation has been remedied.
Failure of a server is handled by the Microsoft Cluster Software MSCS. If, for example, server B detects that server A has failed, it takes over all the applications and resources of server A, stops it and starts the applications again at defined starting points. Failure of an entire building or its infrastructure can be tolerated by interaction of the above components: The MS Cluster Server causes all applications to be transferred to the remaining server; DuplexWrite ensures that there is an identical copy of all data in the second building, and MultiPath ensures access via the alternative paths. Server operation can be continued without interruption or the need for a restart.
