Service-oriented architectures (SOA)

Service-Oriented Architectures

The continuous and flexible adaptation of business processes to changing market realities is of key importance in ensuring the competitiveness and growth of any company. The data centers that map those business processes to IT services then face the challenge of keeping up with these continuous changes in ever shorter cycles.
Service-oriented architectures (SOA) help create an agile framework of IT services that can be rapidly deployed to support new workflows, faster product development, a new manufacturing line or even whole new corporate entities within the enterprise.
SOA is primarily about linking computational resources and the reuse of existing (software) components, thus increasing the overall efficiency of IT services. Individual processes, such as credit card validation during a Web purchase, for example, or an order line entry in an SAP system, are created as individual, modular, and reusable services. The loose coupling of these services into a complete end-to-end business process is called orchestration. Dependencies between individual services and processes (or applications) are not static and can be created and released on-the-fly. This allows the process owner to exchange or optimize individual components without re-engineering the whole application.

The benefits of a real-time infrastructure for SOA

The strategic implementation of a service-oriented architecture in an enterprise demands an equally flexible and adaptable IT infrastructure below the application level. The benefits of SOA can only be fully exploited if the underlying physical resources can be rearranged simultaneously and dynamically according to the demands for resources coming from the individual services and processes.
Monolithic legacy hardware concepts, in which resources are dedicated to specific applications, are ill-equipped to react flexibly and quickly to changing business processes. However, to support a dynamic rearrangement of services within a business process due to changing external conditions, the IT infrastructure must be able to dynamically add and remove the resources assigned to the process. This requires a dynamic infrastructure that reacts in real time to changing needs.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers’ Dynamic Data Center (DDC) fulfills these requirements. Dynamic IT Solutions for a variety of enterprise application scenarios complement service-oriented architectures in an ideal way. Only the combination of a service-oriented application architecture with a dynamic infrastructure platform enables enterprise IT to adapt flexibly and dynamically to changing business requirements.

Dynamic IT Solutions

Within our Dynamic Data Center strategy, we offer ready-made, dynamic infrastructure solutions as a basis to build service-oriented architectures.

How our Dynamic IT Solutions bring benefits to your SOA project

  • The integrated solutions offer a flexible and dynamic provisioning of services and infrastructure resources (servers, storage, and network)

  • Service level agreements can be defined, implemented and maintained

  • Service continuity is guaranteed through automatic failover functionality

  • The solutions deliver optimized resource utilization and considerable cost reduction of 30 to 60 percent for service provisioning, infrastructure components and administration

  • The solutions include all major components (hardware and software) needed to build a complete infrastructure platform for SOA

openSEAS: Integrations Software Suite for Service-Oriented Architectures

openSEAS is a suite of integration software components that can be put to excellent use when setting up service-oriented architectures. It consists of the following components:

  • Oracle Application Server

  • openSEAS BeanConnect

  • Family of standard-compliant JCA adapters with which legacy systems and modern application server applications can be linked

  • openSEAS WebTransactions:
Product for Web enabling and Web integration of host applications
Host applications and data can be handled using a standard Web browser

  • With WebTransactions – Business Object Builder:
Legacy applications (e.g. BS2000 or zOS applications) can be encapsulated and made available as Web Services

Consulting und Services for SOA

A pragmatic approach to beginning the migration to an SOA is the examination of the current application landscape for opportunities to make it “dynamic” and, in parallel, the creation of a mid- and long-term target architecture (services/applications/IT infrastructure). We take a consulting approach to support this procedure together with partners, offering consulting and know-how as well as technical collaboration on projects. We also offer service packages for openSEAS that can be used when setting up a service-oriented architecture.
