openSM2

supplies extensive monitoring data, in order to improve the performance of the systems

Current version: openSM2 V7.0
Announced version: openSM2 V8.0 (BS2000/OSD)

Permanent performance monitoring is a prerequisite for effective, economic operation of IT systems.
With its openSM2 product line, Fujitsu Siemens Computers offers a comprehensive solution for enterprise-wide monitoring of heterogeneous server systems.
openSM2 with its powerful and user-friendly INSPECTOR and ANALYZER components supplies system status information, enabling the user to fine-tune system and application performance in a targeted manner.

The openSM2 product line supports the BS2000/OSD®, Solaris™ (SPARC®) Linux®, Microsoft® Windows and VMware™ ESX Server™ system platforms.

Performance data acquisition

On BS2000/OSD, performance data acquisition is managed by the SM2 performance monitor, which can capture performance data for more than 500 measurement variables. The scope of performance data acquisition can be controlled, since more detailed performance data is required for the analysis of performance problems than for long-term observation and planning of system capacity.
On Solaris systems, the performance data is collected via different system interfaces (kstat, /proc, statvfs). The measurement values for the measurement variables of all sar options are collected. Beyond that, process- and file system-specific measured values, network data and performance data from Symmetrix and CLARiiON or FibreCAT storage systems can also be captured in addition.
On Linux systems the measuring data are seized with the command sadc. The measured values of the measured variables of all sar options are collected.
On Windows systems, the performance data is collected via the Performance Registry Interface. Performance data for more than 300 measurement variables is collected.
On VMware ESX systems, performance data of the entire server and of the individual virtual machines is collected via the VmPerl Scripting API.
The performance data is provided for online monitoring and, if desired, can also be saved to a monitoring file for later analyses.

Online monitoring with INSPECTOR

The simultaneous online monitoring of several server systems enables the rapid recognizing of acute problem situations and their causes.
The monitoring data of the current system status and the chronological development of the measured values are displayed by INSPECTOR in the form of reports in graphic or tabular form at the Windows PC.

Offline analysis of monitoring files with ANALYZER

With the analysis of monitoring files bottleneck and trend analyses as well as long-term capacity plannings can be performed. With ANALYZER, you can generate expressive charts from your performance data with minimal effort. This makes the measured values easy to interpret, so performance bottlenecks can be quickly identified and future performance requirements forecast.

User-specific monitoring (BS2000/OSD)

Task- and program-specific performance data (instruction counter and SVC statistics) can be collected in user-own statistics files for analysis of user tasks and programs. The analysis is performed by the product SM2-PA.
