Dynamic Data Center for greater energy efficiency

Dynamic Data Center for greater energy efficiency
In recent years, technology advances have significantly increased energy efficiency by decreasing energy consumption and the carbon footprint of many electronic products – a timely achievement given the growing concerns about the environment and tightening government regulations. The Dynamic Data Center from Fujitsu Siemens Computers is a smart way to manage your server and storage needs with greater energy efficiency. Operational costs are reduced by selecting low energy consuming products, many of which are smaller, quieter, and deliver more efficiency than ever before.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers is taking the lead on driving best practice in the energy savings of data centres through a three pronged strategy:
  • Reduce consumption of power by integrating efficient components and using power saving functions

  • Extend the capabilities of the data centre by optimizing cooling design and through consolidation

  • Use automation and virtualization tools to minimize resources

Tried and tested IT from a leader in energy efficiency products

Fujitsu Siemens Computers is working with its partners to devise programs to mitigate power use. With technology such as the Intel® Core™ micro architecture and the Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® processor, processor power can be substantially reduced and performance per watt optimised. In addition, demand-based switching can be employed at the CPU level which leads to greater energy efficiency and to cost-effective, clean data centres.

Thermal control is another critical aspect of data centre power management. The fact is hot components fail more quickly than others. Fujitsu Siemens Computers has addressed this issue through its PRIMERGY RX300 S3 server, a radical cool-safe™ design which cuts temperatures by ten percent; doubling lifetime and stabilizing performance. The PRIMERGY RX300 S3 features separate air tunnels, automatically controlled fans, Intel® Xeon® Processors and integrated blade server cooling, creating an infrastructure of highly energy efficiency.

Using properly configured and efficiently-designed data centre technology, businesses can achieve greater energy efficiency. For example, a quad core processor system could reduce power consumption by 41,200 kWh per year, resulting in a savings of €5,000 per year and a reduction in CO2 of 24.7 tons annually.

Turning off servers is also an option. Automation tools such as our ServerView Power Control monitors the status of servers and displays just which servers are in use and which not. When necessary, ServerView Power Control can turn on, or turn off, a server or group of servers. Through this type of automation power consumption can be radically reduced – by as much as 75%.

With an optimum in energy efficiency green storage solutions save resources

We recommend a three step approach for a higher level of energy efficiency:

  1. Optimize data management. This is the part where you can leverage greatest energy efficiency – almost for free – by deleting unused data and implementing ILM (Information Lifecycle Management). ILM more efficiently stores data according to performance and security needs (tape vs. disk / SAS vs. SATA etc.)

  2. Optimize infrastructure. Consolidation is key to increased energy efficiency. Consolidate directly attached storage to one external array to considerably reduce energy consumption. With CentricStor, you can consolidate your tape backup environment to be fit for ILM through True Tape Virtualization.

  3. Optimize devices. More than just increasing energy efficiency: save real money and by using state-of-the-art technology. For instance, a new FibreCAT SX80 with 6 SATA disks consumes only 10% of the energy needed for an old FibreCAT S80 with 56 FC disks (both with a 4 TB storage capacity).
