Initiative D-21

Fujitsu Siemens Computers has always been a firm believer that the spread and use of information and communications technology has the profound ability to advance societies and economies. In fact many of the social and economic improvements that have been witnessed in parts of the world over the last several decades would have been impossible without parallel rapid advances in technology.

We are however also aware that considerable barriers in access to technology still exist, not just in the developing world but where we least expect - often on our own doorstep. As the technology have nots accelerate away from those that have, social and economic inequalities widen.

This is why, as a company with a strong sense of responsibility, we are proud of our ongoing support and sponsorship of Initiative D-21 in Germany. With more than 200 representatives across business, politics, and the NGO community, D-21 is Germany's largest public private partnership. Established in 1999 its shared goal is to improve the general conditions necessary to advance Germany into the information and knowledge society. In particular it is committed to reducing, by half, those disadvantaged societal groups with limited access to information and communications technology by 2010.

D-21 is turning these objectives into reality though some 40 practical projects, each of which is headed by a member drawn from the business and political sphere. Examples include 'Girls Day', which, now in its seventh year, has seen more than 500,000 girls learn more about occupational opportunities within the IT sector. Others include 'Training Teachers', a project addressing a lack of IT skills and knowledge among school pupils through the promotion of learning and training with teachers.
