The ÖKO institute is one of the leading independent environmental research and consulting institutions in Europe. Since its founding in 1977 it has been working to realize a vision for a local, national and global sustainable development through conscious scientific research and consultation with politicians, business and other leading players in society.
Our partnership with the ÖKO Institute focussed on the area of Sustainable Production and Consumption. We were asked, and were pleased to contribute, to a large research project, 'Social Aspects in the Production of Computers' focussing on the growing production of electronic notebooks. This research project aimed to further an understanding of product sustainability assessment and methodology, in particular relating to the integration of social impact assessment across the whole life-cycle of computer production. With growing consumer awareness and demand for fairly produced products such research has never been more relevant and needed. Fujitsu Siemens Computers worked with the ÖKO research project team arranging visits with, and facilitating access to, our suppliers on location in Taiwan. We used our last Supplier Day in Augsburg to communicate the results of this research both internally and externally to suppliers.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has long been committed to a management model which seeks to embed social and environmental impact assessment across the entire lifecycle of a product. We recognise however that building the knowledge and tools to achieve this will always be an ongoing process. That is to say, there is still a long way to go and much to do - particularly in the development of a consistently effective corporate response to social impacts within the electronics industry. Partnerships such as ours with the ÖKO Institute are highly valuable both in terms of developing our shared stock of knowledge in this area, and in enabling us to identify the long-term steps we should be taking to minimise the social and environmental impacts of our products.
